Listen everyone, we are missing out. Isn’t it about time our generation’s very own Supergroup formed? I’m talking about a group of musicians so out-of-this world awesome that the masses will scream and shout just at the mere site of them. The 70′s had Crosby Stills Nash and Young. The late 80′s got The Traveling Wilbury’s. And us, well, we did get Them Crooked Vultures; but, I’m going to dismiss them for the sake of this article because I think we can do better (they also haven’t been nearly as successful as either of the aforementioned groups).
I think its high time we got the supergroup we deserved. With that in mind, let me lay down who I think would form the ultimate band for our generation. Here are the chosen candidates…
Singer/songwriter: Jeff Tweedy-Wilco
Jeff Tweedy of Wilco, is one of the best singer/songwriters when looking back over the past 15ish years of music. Like many great songwriters, Tweedy is versatile. His ability to create romantic/love infused ballads comes just as easily as his knack for writing introspective songs about the every day events happening around him.
Furthermore,I want to include Tweedy for two more reasons. One, I dig Tweedy’s voice. Oftentimes raspy and soft spoken, its able to deliver an emotional punch unlike many other singers today. Two, he’s an amazing musician who can hold his own on stage. If you haven’t seem Wilco live, Tweedy can oftentimes be found tearing it up on guitar with his band mates.
Lead Guitar: John Mayer
Say what you will about john Mayer, but you can’t deny he’s talented. After hearing both Continuum, and John Mayer Trio’s Try, it was pretty obvious this guy was serious. On top of his amazing ability to melt your face off, Mayer has a great voice.
Lastly, for some reason, I could see him and Tweedy meshing together musically. Although there personalities couldn’t be more different, I do think they both respect and admire the same music. They represent this, sort of, classic americana inspired rock, and could fit quite nicely together.
Drummer: Bryan Devendorf- The National
Its tough coming up with a super star drummer from our generation (besides David Grohl). But even if he isn’t necessarily a houehold name, Bryan Devendorf of The National is the real deal. On his band’s past two albums, his pulse pounding, rythmic drum lines often fuel the songs. The beats he lays down are, at times, the heart and soul of the energy and emotion that comes with so many of The National’s songs. Go listen to the track he laid down for “Fake Empire”. Trust me, he belongs in this group.
For the record, I’ve decided I’m not going to include a super star bassist because I can’t think of anyone, except for Flea. And guess what Flea? You had your chance with Atom’s for Peace. Don’t be greedy, you power hungry, bass crunching bastard (only kidding…but seriously).
What do you think? Agree or Disagree with the choices? The only thing we need now is a band name…
